Ceon GR-01 Puts Brazilian Independent Watchmaking on the Map

Independent watchmaking has become far less predictable, and that’s a good thing.

The Ceon GR-01 arrives from Curitiba, Brazil, with the confidence of a mature design and the unusual distinction of being conceived, manufactured and hand-finished by founder Ricardo A. Gracioli.

It’s a slim integrated steel watch with a hand-wound movement, an experimental clasp system and a price that places it firmly in serious collector territory.

The GR-01 sits in the broad family of integrated bracelet watches, but it doesn’t chase the usual visual noise of the category.

At 38mm across, 44mm lug-to-lug and just 6mm thick, it has proportions that should feel more architectural than sporty on the wrist.

The case uses a three-part construction with a round bezel, case middle and solid caseback held together by eight studs and screws.

Those stud heads are aligned in pairs at the cardinal points, turning the construction into part of the design rather than hiding it completely.

The dial is made from the same VC-150 steel as the case and bracelet, keeping the watch almost aggressively monochrome.

Polished Dauphine hands indicate the hours and minutes, while a recessed running seconds display sits at 6 o’clock alongside the R. A. Gracioli signature.

VC-150 steel gives the GR-01 its material identity

The GR-01’s most distinctive material choice is VC-150, a heat-treated Brazilian martensitic tool steel originally used for steam turbine blades.

Ceon uses it for the case, dial and bracelet, making the material central to both the structure and the look of the watch.

The finishing process is deliberately layered.

Each case and bracelet is hand-sanded and lapped to create mirror-polished surfaces, then stonewashed for a matte effect that still reveals flashes of polish as the light moves.

The chamfers are then hand-polished with pegwood and diamond paste, giving the watch sharper transitions between flat surfaces and polished edges.

The high polish is not merely decorative, either.

VC-150 is classified as stainless steel, but it does not have the same corrosion resistance as 316L or 904L, so the finishing helps remove the small surface points where pitting can begin.

A chemical treatment is also used to form a protective chromium oxide layer across the steel components.

A slim Peseux movement and a magnetic clasp

Inside the GR-01 is the Peseux 7001, a hand-wound calibre introduced in 1971 and long appreciated by smaller watchmakers for its thin architecture.

At only 2.5mm thick, the movement helps Ceon keep the full watch to a 6mm case height while retaining a practical 42-hour power reserve.

It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and displays hours, minutes and small seconds.

The bracelet clasp is more unusual than the movement.

Designed by Gracioli, it uses a single magnet and a pair of precisely machined guide pins rather than a conventional folding system.

That approach is possible because VC-150 becomes ferromagnetic after quenching, allowing the clasp to close magnetically while remaining only 3mm thick.

To protect the movement, the watch uses a calculated caseback thickness and an additional 0.2mm permalloy shielding layer.

The result is a bracelet that can maintain a continuous profile without the bulk of a more traditional clasp.

Details & Specifications

The Ceon GR-01 is unlikely to be an easy casual purchase, and that’s clearly not the point.

Its appeal is in the specificity of the project, from Brazilian steel and local production to an uncompromisingly thin case and a clasp that could only come from a maker willing to solve problems his own way.

For collectors drawn to independent watchmaking beyond the usual European centres, the GR-01 is a compelling new marker on the map.
