Albishorn Gives the Marinagraph a Sharper Classic Turn

Albishorn’s young catalogue is built around a clever idea: watches that feel historically plausible, even when they never actually existed.

The latest Marinagraph Classic and Classic Fumé continue that approach with a more restrained look, while keeping the brand’s unusual regatta timing system at the centre of the watch.

For collectors who like vintage character but don’t want vintage fragility, this is the sort of niche independent watchmaking that’s worth a closer look.

Founded in 2024 by Sébastien Chaulmontet, Albishorn has positioned itself around “imaginary vintage” watches, meaning modern creations that explore believable alternative histories.

The Marinagraph plays in the world of late-1950s yacht racing, with a fictional link to Columbia, the American defender of the 1958 America’s Cup.

That narrative isn’t just decorative.

The watch’s key function is a 10-minute retrograde countdown designed for the tense pre-start sequence of a regatta.

Activated by the red ribbed anodised aluminium monopusher on the left side of the case, the countdown hand runs back toward zero, then disengages and freezes in place when the countdown is complete.

That detail matters because the central chronograph seconds hand continues to run, while the stopped countdown indication avoids a confusing display at the moment the race begins.

The red aluminium pusher also gives the watch one of its strongest visual signatures, with the material nodding to Columbia’s aluminium mast.

The Classic dials clean up the deck

The new Marinagraph comes in two dial treatments.

The Classic has a sunburst black dial, while the Classic Fumé uses white lacquer with a gradient finish.

Both versions avoid the clutter that often comes with chronographs, keeping the dial free of conventional sub-dials and placing the regatta countdown in a blue and red retrograde arc in the lower-left quadrant.

The decisive final five-minute sector is marked in red, which gives the function proper visual hierarchy rather than treating it as a novelty.

Legibility is one of the strongest decisions here.

The applied hour markers remain intact, with triangles at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock and circular markers elsewhere, all treated with Super-LumiNova.

At 3 o’clock, a circular aperture works as a running indicator, rendered in blue and red on the white dial and white and blue on the black dial.

The hour and minute hands use rhomboid-shaped tips, a detail that echoes Albishorn’s mountain emblem and the shapes set inside the triangular markers.

On the black dial, the central chronograph seconds hand and countdown hand are bright red, with a luminescent retro-style lollipop counterweight.

The white dial version switches those hands to blue, giving the lighter model a cooler, more nautical character without becoming costume-like.

A left-handed layout with a practical argument

The Marinagraph Classic references keep the same core dimensions as the earlier Marinagraph and the Maxigraph, measuring 39mm across, 13mm thick and 47.7mm from lug to lug.

The flared bezel brings the visual diameter to 42.7mm, so it should have more wrist presence than the base measurement suggests.

The case layout is one of the most distinctive parts of the watch.

Albishorn places the monopusher on the left case flank and the crown at 10 o’clock, creating a “destro” configuration intended to make thumb activation feel natural and efficient.

The stainless steel case is satin finished with polished chamfers and accents, while the solid caseback is secured by screws and engraved with the silhouette of a 12-foot yacht.

Unlike the earlier Marinagraph’s tide-style bezel execution, these Classic references use a black domed sapphire crystal insert with luminous markings.

The watch remains water-resistant to 100 metres, a useful rating for a sports chronograph that wants to look at home near water.

The ALB01 A calibre does the heavy lifting

Inside is the proprietary ALB01 A, an automatic monopusher chronograph calibre with a heavily modified 7750 architecture.

The movement measures 30mm by 6.6mm, runs at 4Hz and offers a 64-hour power reserve.

Its job is not only to drive hours, minutes and the central chronograph seconds, but also Albishorn’s patented 10-minute retrograde countdown with a running indicator.

That combination gives the Marinagraph a more specific identity than most vintage-inflected sports watches in this price segment.

It’s not simply borrowing old design cues, it’s building a functional fantasy around a particular moment in sailing history.
