A. Lange & Söhne Shrinks the 1815 Up/Down Into a Sharper Limited Edition

A. Lange & Söhne has given the 1815 Up/Down a more intimate presence on the wrist without softening the watch’s distinctly Saxon character.

The new limited editions move the familiar power-reserve model into a 37.5mm case, offered in either 18k pink gold or 18k white gold, both paired with a dark blue dial.

It’s a quiet adjustment, but an important one for a watch whose appeal has always lived in proportion, restraint and mechanical clarity.

A smaller case for a historically minded Lange

The 1815 collection takes its name from the birth year of Ferdinand Adolph Lange, and its design language has always leaned into the brand’s pocket-watch heritage.

That lineage is especially visible in the 1815 Up/Down, where the power-reserve display is not treated as a modern embellishment but as a central part of the watch’s identity.

The new case measures 37.5mm across and 8.7mm thick, making it smaller than the 39mm second-generation 1815 Up/Down introduced in 2013.

For many collectors, that shift will be the main attraction.

The watch retains the familiar Lange case construction, with satin-brushed flanks, a polished concave bezel and sharply curved attached lugs that help the case sit low on the wrist.

The fluted crown adds a practical note, especially on a manually wound watch that invites regular interaction.

In pink gold, the watch is fitted to a reddish-brown hand-stitched alligator strap with a matching pink gold prong buckle.

The white gold version comes on a blue hand-stitched alligator strap with a white gold prong buckle, giving the cooler metal a more tonal, contemporary feel.

Blue dials and the AUF/AB display

The blue dial gives these editions a more immediate visual pull than the most traditional 1815 configurations, but the layout remains pure Lange.

A recessed central area is framed by a crisp railway-style minutes track, with small dots at the hours and triple dots at the quarters.

White pad-printed Arabic numerals sit cleanly against the dark dial, while lancet-shaped hour and minute hands are made in the same gold as the case.

The power-reserve indicator sits at 8 o’clock and is marked AUF and AB, the German words for up and down.

Its silver-coloured sub-dial is snailed, with a black segmented outer track and a double red segment marking the depleted-power zone.

Opposite it, the small seconds display at 4 o’clock balances the composition with the same snailed finish and black railway track.

The symmetry is part of the charm.

Rather than crowding the dial, the two sub-dials give the watch a calm instrument-like quality, with blued-steel hands adding a flash of traditional colour.

The movement behind the slim profile

The Up/Down display has deeper roots than its clean dial might suggest.

A. Lange & Söhne received a patent in 1879 for a pocket-watch mechanism that showed whether a watch was wound or unwound, addressing a practical concern at a time when reliable mechanical information mattered deeply.

Power-reserve indicators had existed before then, but earlier systems could be bulky and complex.

The Lange approach used a more space-efficient differential gear system, helping preserve the slimness of the pocket watches in which it appeared.

The modern calibre L051.2 follows that idea in contemporary form.

Its power-reserve mechanism uses a planetary gear system integrated directly into the movement rather than stacked above it, which helps explain the notably thin 8.7mm case height.

Visible through the sapphire caseback, the manually wound movement carries the expected Lange signatures.

There is a German silver three-quarter plate with Glashütte ribbing, integrated winding wheels decorated with solarisation, seven gold chatons secured by blued screws and a hand-engraved balance cock.

The movement is assembled twice by hand, beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and delivers a 72-hour power reserve.

The new 1815 Up/Down limited editions will be shown at the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace from 4 to 6 September.

For collectors who prefer Lange at its most balanced and wearable, this smaller blue-dial pairing may be one of the more persuasive expressions of the 1815 line.
